Dunbar is a venerable neighbourhood snuggled in between Point Grey and tonier Westside neighbourhoods such as Kerrisdale. It’s relatively modest, but locals have a strong sense of community. Dunbar residents enjoy stability and resist dramatic change, and once you are established here you’ll know why. It’s a neighbourhood to love and be loved in.
It’s also one of Vancouver’s key bastions of single detached homes, which account for two-thirds of local housing. The majority was built before 1960, giving the area a quaint character you’ll find in few other neighbourhoods. The age and relatively small size of many of the existing houses, have made several properties prime candidates for redevelopment. Prices reflect the general increase in values seen elsewhere on the Westside, averaging about twice the median for Vancouver.
Together with cherry blossoms in the spring and fragrant gardens in the summer, homes here are close to the three separate retail villages along Dunbar Street. St. George’s, a private boys school, and several public schools are located nearby, and Pacific Spirit Regional Park serves as the community’s backyard. Transit connections along key arterials provide east-west connections but many people opt for the convenience of a car to reach destinations across the city.
