Point Grey is where I’ve chosen to live though the path I took here was not quick or direct; I spent many years residing in other great areas of the city; I actually grew up in pleasant Kerrisdale, South Granville and Marine Drive homes. It was a mid-life awakening (some might say crisis) that drew me closer to the water and the woods found in the north west part of Vancouver. Newly single at 40, I moved to a small rented apartment in Kitsilano where I took to walking or cycling daily along the beaches and visiting the numerous casual cafes and bistros of the neighborhood; I met many great new friends. Though a life-long Vancouver resident, I was frequently surprised that I could have spent so much of my life oblivious to the beautiful vistas and appealing qualities of this area.
In summer Kitsilano became more frenetic and I often retreated to the less crowded parks and beaches of Jericho, Locarno and Spanish Banks further west in Point Grey. I found too in winter that walks in Point Grey’s Pacific Spirit Park woods were becoming more frequent as the dense forest provided shelter from cold winds and direct rain.
After visiting Point Grey several times a week for a number of years it dawned on me I should move here and focus my professional real estate energies in an area I truly loved. Thus was born my dedicated Point Grey real estate website. A few years later I found and bought a modest, quiet Point Grey condo with a view of the mountains and a back door that exited within steps of Jericho Beach. I have been here ever since, nearing a decade of complete and blissful domestic intransience.
It would take a fantastic turn of events for me to move away though western Kitsilano and Dunbar are places I consider nearly as attractive. I joined the Jericho Tennis Club which has further anchored my leisure, sport and social roots to the community. Many of my clients love this area for similar reasons though it is also appealing to them to have such a short commute to either UBC, Downtown or the commercial and medical facilities and services around VGH in nearby Fairview.
If Point Grey has a detracting facet it of course has to be the cost of detached homes, which in the past decade has risen far out of the reach of average income earners. The alternative to a house is strata or condo ownership where prices are actually comparable to other desirable west side areas; so it’s affordable in that sense but the inventory for Point Grey condos and town houses is only a fraction of what has been zoned for and built in Kitsilano and Fairview; your budget might fit but your choice is more limited.
